Shrine of the North American Martyrs

On our way up to Camp (for all those not in the know, it's really just my G'parents house up in the Adirondacks) we stopped at the Shrine of the North American Martyrs in Auriesville, NY. It was perfect timing because my Aunt Mary's family was at the closing mass for a youth conference from the weekend. We got to give hugs and say hi to lots of cousins.

The Shrine is the birthplace of Blessed Kateri Tekawitha. It is also the resting place of three martyrs, the most famous being St. Issac Joges. We were able to walk the footsteps down a ravine and learn the story of how one of them died at the hands of the Iroquois Indians. We were attacked by mosquitoes but were still able to find peace in the footsteps of holiness.

There was so much to see; stations of the cross, a museum showing a timeline of the martyrs and the life story of Blessed Kateri, the seven sorrows of Mary, the ravine where one of the Jesuit priests gave his life, as well as a huge church called the Colosseum. It was a wonderful experience and we were glad that last minute we added it onto our itinerary.
